Angel xpress foundation is a not-for-profit organization registered as a section 8 company; initiated and founded by anubha sharma and co-founded by beenaa advani in early 2012. the organisation was primarily formed to bring an opportunity to the socially conscious and concerned educated affluent like stay at home mothers and the active retired to interact with and help school going children from their neighboring slums at safe and freely available public places like neighborhood parks. six years down the line, the angel xpress foundation team, consisting both of volunteers and on rolls staff members, has trained hundreds of volunteers who contribute 2 to 3 hours a week to tutor/mentor students enrolled at our learning centers across mumbai. the number of children in the program grow year on year as we continue to add new locations. in 2017-18, we have included over 1300 children in the program across 12 locations. during the daily lessons in english & math, we guide our volunteers to include lessons on values and life-skills through activities and interactions to lay the ground work for an empowered youth, that have the will and the capability to become productive and responsible members of the society. dr swaroop sampath has taken on the task of training our volunteers in teaching life-skills through drama this year. a daily healthy snack, several fun and educational outings over a year, weekend classes to encourage creativity and talent development, medical, dental camps, counselling sessions in collaboration with local citizen groups and clothes, shoes and toy redistribution drives further help bridge the divide. while the mumbaikars who are volunteering for this work are delighted to meet like minded neighbors while spending productive hours in community service in their own neighborhood, the children who have fairly harsh and deprived lives otherwise, blossom from the attention and not only do they acquire confidence, language, logic and reasoning skills, they start to do better at school as well as at home with encouraging feedback on their attitudes and behavior finding its way to us. we find we are able to influence whole families and their attitudes positively through parent teacher interactions. our efforts are aimed at laying a blueprint that can help us as a society to look beyond our homes and actively participate in the creation of an aware, responsible and able future generation. over time we hope to trigger a social movement wherein volunteerism becomes a lifestyle choice for every educated indian. our intent is to reach 10,000 children by training 2000 committed volunteers by 2022 in mumbai. for more www.angelxpress.org
