Established in December 2014 by IIT-Madras, the IITM Bioincubator (IITMBI or BI) promotes biotechnology-based innovation and entrepreneurship in India. It fosters the development of globally competitive products by startups, aiming for successful commercialization. Operational since 2015 at IIT Madras Research Park with funding from BIRAC, IITMBI offers a ~9000 sq.ft. facility, providing incubated startups with office space (co-working and/or independent offices), wet lab space, and access to extensive equipment/instruments.As part of IIT-Madras' deep tech startup ecosystem, spearheaded by IITM Incubation Cell (IITMIC), IITMBI officially merged with IITMIC in August 2023. This integration enhances the support system for startups, offering technical and business mentorship, business support services (accounting, legal, IPR, HR, product design/prototyping, branding), connections to investors (Angels/VCs), industry links, startup training, and seed funding (grants/soft loans).Since its inception, IITMBI has incubated 24 startups with a combined valuation of Rs 281 Cr, cumulative revenue of Rs 5.5 Cr in FY 2022-23, created over 100 direct jobs, and filed 15+ patents. IITMBI excels in translating lab-based discoveries into marketable products, nurturing innovation, and bio-entrepreneurship. It promotes collaboration between startups, industry, faculty, and students of IITM. The incubator provides a comprehensive support system for the entrepreneurial journey from idea to market, with dual strategic goals: (a) offering infrastructure for technology scale-up and pilot-scale validation, and (b) fostering research networking for industry-academia collaboration through technical mentorship, business mentoring, funding, and identifying early customers.
