A joint venture between delhi-based optiemus infracom and the $20 billion taiwanese maker wistron corp has emerged as the single-largest contract manufacturer for smartphones in india and has bagged exclusive contracts from korea's lg, china's oneplus and taiwan's htc. apart from this, jv - optiemus electronics ltd (oel) - is also manufacturing devices for chinese major oppo. oel was formed last year and the indian promoter ashok gupta holds 80% equity in the company. it comes at a time when foxconn, the world's largest contract manufacturer, is charting out an aggressive expansion strategy for india, looking to pump in billions of dollars. oel has been expanding at a rapid pace, especially as many mobile companies are looking at local manufacturing after the government slapped a 12% duty on imported devices around two years ago. the company has now begun production from an all-new facility at noida in uttar pradesh and this has an annual manufacturing capacity of 8 million devices. it will employ around 4,000 people. 'business is growing swiftly, and we have now started production from the facility which has been set up on a 78,000 sq mtrs area,' ravinder zutshi, former honcho at samsung india, who is now the md of optiemus infracom, told toi. 'a total of 20 manufacturing lines have been installed here and we have begun production for lg, oppo, htc and oneplus.' the jv, which is investing a total of $200 million, plans a massive expansion in uttar pradesh and has now made an application for a second manufacturing location at greater noida. 'this will be a mega facility and will be spread across a 25-acre area with an annual capacity of 25 million units. we plan to go in for a deeper level of manufacturing here and are looking to make printed circuit boards (pcb) at the location
